holy week at first church
Palm Sunday, 3/20 @ 10AM
We'll begin our journey to the cross with a festive palm processional. Our celebration will include music from Godspell and Bach. We will end in silent remembrance with our traditional "Stripping of the Sanctuary" in preparation for Good Friday.
After worship, weather permitting, we will have our coffee hour on the 27th Street lawn where we'll join the City of Oakland in welcoming runners for the Oakland Running Festival. We'll share water with the runners and snacks with our cheering neighbors.
Maundy Thursday, 3/24 @ 6PM
We will journey with Jesus and his disciples as they celebrated the Passover in the Upper Room. We share a Seder meal and time of story telling. Following the meal, we will follow the light into the sanctuary for communion and prayer.
Good Friday, 3/24
NOON: Our Good Friday remembrance begins with a traditional Seven Last Words of Jesus service sponsored by the Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance. Participants include Rev. Kamal Hassan from Sojourner Truth Presbyterian Church, Rev. Dr. Lawrence Van Hook from The Community Church of Oakland, Rev. Sandhya Jha from Oakland Peace Center, Rev. Dr. John Giles from Union Baptist Church, Rev. B.K. Woodson, Sr. from Bay Area Christian Connection, and our own Pastor Debra.
7:30PM: At our traditional Tenebrae Service of Darkness, we will focus in a meditative way on the people Jesus encountered on his way to Golgotha. Join us for this time of quiet music, readings and visuals as we pray together.
